Book trailers

One of my favorite things when I go to the movies is getting there early so I can see the previews. I love the words COMING SOON. I even have my own system for deciding which movies I will see at the theater and which ones I will wait to see on DVD.

Now, I have a way to see what new books I want to read: book trailers. Book trailers are video previews for books and they are growing in popularity. Authors and publishers post book trailers on their websites. Youtube and GoodReads also post book trailers. There are even some websites devoted to book trailers (Book Screening and Book Trailers). Fans of books can create and post their own book trailers (hint hint- if you are looking for something to do this summer…). So, the next time you are trying to find a book to read, check out the book trailers on-line and “see it before you read it”!

Here are some of my personal favorites:

Author videos - Suzanne Collins, Scott Westerfeld

Last night I received an email from Borders Media that had a really cool link to a video of a group discussion with Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games and the just released sequel, Catching Fire.

This video is AWESOME!! I learned things I didn't know, like how the books are based on a Greek myth. And she talks about the movie they're going to make. Whoo-hoo!

And Melissa from the Southwest branch sent me a link to the video book trailer for Scott Westerfeld's upcoming Steampunk book called Leviathan. Thanks, Melissa. You're awesome!

There's still time to turn in your Video Book Review!

There's still plenty of time to enter for your chance to win $25 to Barnes and Noble! Just turn in a video of you giving a review of your favorite (or least favorite) book by 5 p.m. on March 31! Have fun, be creative, and turn your review in to any public library branch. Click here for details and to download all the stuff you need.

Don't have a camera? No problem! Borrow a video camera from the Studio at the Central Library or from the Teen Zone at Northeast. You can even create a video of still pictures of yourself by using onetruemedia or animoto websites! See an example below.

Video Book Trailers?

When I'm at the movies with my friends we like to play the "thumbs-up or thumbs-down" game during all those movie trailers. After each trailer plays, everyone will stick their hand out and give their opinion, using their thumb of course, of how the movie will probably turn out.

Now an awesome concept in the word of video has surfaced: the book trailer! It's a 60 - 90 second video introduction to a book, giving enticing little tidbits enough to make you wonder
what is that book about and where can I get it? Take a look at these award winning videos and judge for yourself! Also take a look at this year's Teen Video Book Award finalists from Kirkus Reviews (open October 27). You may not be able to keep yourself from giving these awesome books a thumbs up!
